Blizzard's class deep dive series reached Mage and Shaman on 7 October 2026, and neither class gets away with light tuning. Mages pick up a new hybrid spell in Frostfire Bolt, a redesigned Arcane Blast and their own takes on Ice Lance, Fingers of Frost, Missile Barrage and Hot Streak. Shaman get the totem overhaul the class has wanted for twenty years, along with Lava Burst, Riptide, Water Shield and Maelstrom Weapon, and lose Elemental Mastery in the process.
Blizzard announced the article on the forums with a short teaser:
Our World of Warcraft: Forever class deep dive series continues with developer insights into Mages and Shaman. Learn how Mage updates expand Arcane, Fire, and Frost magic with new hybrid possibilities like Frostfire Bolt, and how Shaman changes make totems easier to manage, weapon imbues longer lasting, and Elemental Combat, Enhancement, and Restoration builds more versatile.
The original article had a few gaps that Blizzard patched in the forum thread over the following day (the Elemental Mastery removal, Rockbiter Weapon in the imbue list and the removal of Nature's Guidance). Everything below reflects the corrected text.
The general talent framework is the same one we have seen in earlier deep dives. Talents unlock at level 10 and keep the familiar structure, with one-point milestone (gold medal) talents at 11, 21 and 31 points, now joined by a new milestone at 16 points. You change talents, including Legacy talents, at a class trainer in one of the major cities, and Dual Specialization becomes available at level 40. Blizzard stresses that abilities and talents may keep changing throughout the beta.
Mage
The Mage changes are built around picking the right spell for the moment: Arcane sets up and empowers follow-up casts, Fire keeps rewarding critical strikes and timing, and Frost holds on to control while gaining interactions that tie it to the rest of the class. The real headline is how much cross-school play is now possible. You can explore it in the Mage talent calculator.
Baseline abilities
- Comprehension: A new Mage-only minor tradeskill that lets Mages read and decipher scrolls dropped by creatures in the world. Blizzard says these give various benefits that players will discover on their own. The ability used to attempt it is Comprehend Scroll, found in the General tab of the spellbook.
- Cone of Cold: Duration decreased. Blizzard frames this as part of a general fix against gold farmers and experience boosters who kite large numbers of creatures for repetitive, low-risk gold and experience.
- Frostfire Bolt: New spell learned at level 40. It counts as both a Fire and a Frost spell, and most talents that benefit either school also benefit it. It has a 3 second cast, deals large upfront damage like Fireball, and applies a debuff with both damage over time and a movement speed Slow. It always uses the higher of the Mage's Fire or Frost spell damage bonuses and the lower of the target's Fire or Frost resistances.
- Mage Armor: Mana regeneration bonus from Spirit increased.
Frostfire Bolt exists to give hybrid Fire and Frost builds a spell that benefits from both halves. Blizzard's own example is a build taking Ignite and Ice Shards: Frostfire Bolt crits for 200% damage, then Ignite adds another 40% of that, for a total of 280% damage on a critical strike. Since it takes the better of your two damage bonuses and the weaker of the target's two resistances, it is also the spell that quietly solves the old Fire-immune boss problem for anyone who specs into it.
Arcane
The Arcane tree is the most heavily reworked of the three, built around the new Arcane Blast.
- Wand Specialization: Now only requires 2 talent points for the same benefit.
- Arcane Focus: Redesigned. Now grants increased chance to hit with Arcane spells.
- Improved Channeling: Formerly Improved Arcane Missiles. Now also protects Arcane Blast against spellcasting interruption from taking damage.
- Arcane Subtlety: Moved from row 1 down to row 2. Its resistance-ignoring effect is a little stronger, and its threat reduction on Arcane spells a little weaker.
- Magic Absorption: Now has a 1 second cooldown on triggering its effect, to prevent some abuses.
- Arcane Concentration: The chance to trigger is now reduced when the Mage casts spells of a significantly lower rank. Blizzard says gold farmers abused this talent to "fish" for procs with cheap low-rank spells. The same kind of penalty has been applied to multiple talents across many classes, and players should expect any similar talent that triggers a free effect to be penalised for low-rank spells.
- Arcane Resilience: Moved from row 3 up to row 2. No longer a gold medal talent. Now 2 talent points for the same effect.
- Arcane Geometry: New row 3 talent. Increases the range of Arcane spells.
- Arcane Impact: Formerly Improved Arcane Explosion. Now increases the critical strike chance of all Arcane spells.
- Arcane Blast: New 11-point gold medal talent and new spell, redesigned from the version in early expansions. It deals immediate damage with a 2.5 second cast, then increases the damage done by all other Mage spells and increases its own Mana cost. These increases stack up to 4 times and last 8 seconds or until any other spell is cast.
- Arcane Shielding: Formerly Improved Mana Shield. The Mana cost reduction to Mana Shield is increased, and it now also increases the resistances granted by Mage Armor.
- Improved Counterspell: Slight redesign. A single point now gives a shorter-duration Silence every time, instead of a 50% chance of any Silence at all.
- Arcane Meditation: Mana regeneration from Spirit while casting increased. Now requires Arcane Concentration.
- Missile Barrage: New 16-point gold medal talent. Arcane Blast, Fireball, Frostbolt and Frostfire Bolt have a chance to make your next Arcane Missiles channel twice as fast and cost no Mana. The chance is doubled for Arcane Blast.
- Arcane Mind: This entry has no separate catalog link; see the note below.
- Arcane Instability: No longer requires Presence of Mind.
- Arcane Power: Now requires Presence of Mind.
One more Arcane change: Arcane Mind is redesigned to increase Intellect instead of maximum Mana, now also increases the critical strike damage bonus of Arcane spells, and no longer requires Arcane Resilience. Magic Attunement has been moved to baseline.
The new Arcane Blast is the opposite of the version many remember. Blizzard notes that older versions encouraged Mages to cast only that one spell, while this one wants you to build a stack and then spend it on something else. Paired with Missile Barrage, the natural rhythm looks like Blast, Blast, then cash in on a fast, free Arcane Missiles or a big Fireball.
Fire
Fire keeps its crit-driven identity and gets a proper Pyroblast payoff.
- Wake of Fire: Formerly Improved Fire Blast. Moved from row 2 up to row 1. Reduces the cooldown of Fire Blast by even more, and each time you kill a non-trivial target your next Fire Blast gains a large increase to critical strike chance.
- Incineration: Formerly Incinerate. Moved from row 3 up to row 1. Now increases the critical strike chance of Ice Lance and Arcane Blast, in addition to Fire Blast and Scorch.
- Improved Fireball: Now also reduces the cast time of Frostfire Bolt.
- Ignite: Now a unique debuff per Mage, rather than the Classic Era behaviour where all Mages in an encounter shared one Ignite debuff. This fixes problems with threat and damage attribution. Blizzard has also made sure damage is not lost when critical strikes land too close together, as was done in Season of Discovery.
- Impact: Another talent where casting low-rank spells now lowers the chance to trigger.
- Burning Soul: Now requires 3 talent points for the same effect.
- Improved Scorch: The debuff now benefits only the casting Mage.
- Heating Up: New row 4 talent that requires Pyroblast. Non-periodic critical strikes with Fireball, Frostfire Bolt, Fire Blast and Scorch reduce the cast time of your next Pyroblast by 25%, stacking up to 3 times. At 3 stacks Pyroblast takes 1.5 seconds. Blizzard calls this Forever's variation on the Hot Streak talent from early expansions.
- Blast Wave: No longer requires Pyroblast.
No Fire talents were removed. The Ignite and Improved Scorch changes together end the era of a raid stacking Fire Mages to share one giant Ignite and one Scorch debuff. Every Mage now handles their own, which is fairer on threat and a lot less dependent on raid composition.
Frost
Frost gets Ice Lance and Fingers of Frost, while its farming power is reined in.
- Elemental Precision: Now increases chance to hit with Fire and Frost spells instead of reducing the target's chance to resist.
- Permafrost: Minor redesign. Instead of extending Chill effects by 1/2/3 seconds, it now extends them by 11/22/33%, so it no longer inflates the duration of Improved Blizzard so much.
- Frost Channeling: Moved from row 4 up to row 3.
- Ice Lance: New 11-point gold medal talent. Instant cast with low damage, increased by 300% when the target is Frozen (or treated as Frozen by Fingers of Frost).
- Improved Blizzard: Slow reduced. It now maxes out at 40% instead of 65%, specifically to weaken the AoE instance farming used by gold farmers and boosters.
- Ice Block: Moved from row 5 up to row 4 and is now the 16-point gold medal talent.
- Shatter: No longer requires Improved Frost Nova.
- Cold Snap: Moved from row 3 down to row 5 and is now the 21-point gold medal talent. Cooldown increased to 10 minutes from 5 minutes.
- Fingers of Frost: New row 5 talent and a prerequisite for Ice Lance. Your Chill effects have a chance to grant 1/2 charges of Fingers of Frost, which make your spells treat the target as Frozen.
- Winter's Chill: Now only benefits the casting Mage, and its critical strike bonus applies only to Frostbolt and Ice Lance.
No Frost talents were removed. Between the shorter Cone of Cold, the weaker Improved Blizzard Slow and Permafrost's percentage scaling, the classic Frost AoE kite takes a real hit, and Blizzard is open that this is aimed at farmers and boosters. The 10 minute Cold Snap, now buried at 21 points, also makes the double Ice Block trick a much more expensive investment.
Blizzard closes the Mage section by restating the class identity: one of the strongest and most resourceful damage dealers, with Polymorph among the best crowd control in the game and ranged AoE stronger and more varied than any other class, but extremely fragile in melee. Arcane manipulates and consumes Mana for damage, Fire delivers heavy hits and critical damage, and Frost offers combat control no other class matches. Their buffs, food and water, control and damage keep them useful to any group.
Shaman
The Shaman update moves more of the class's power into decisions made mid-fight. Totems can now be summoned in sets, tracked, dismissed and repositioned, weapon imbues stop needing constant refreshing, and all three trees get new tools. The Shaman talent calculator has the full trees.
Totems
- Global cooldown: All totems now have a 1.0 second global cooldown, down from 1.5 seconds.
- Duration: All totems that provide persistent buffs now last 5 minutes instead of 2 minutes. Shorter-duration totems are unaffected.
- Tracking UI: A new interface shows which totems are active and their remaining duration. Right-clicking a totem in it unsummons it instantly.
- Resistance Totems: Now give their resistance bonus to the entire raid group.
- Call of the Elements: Learned at level 20, this unlocks the totem bar UI. You pre-program a set of 4 totems, one of each element, and Call of the Elements summons all 4 after a 3 second cast, costing the sum of their Mana costs.
- Call of the Spirits: Learned at level 30, adds a second pre-programmed set of 4 totems.
- Call of the Ancestors: Learned at level 40, adds a third set of 4 totems.
- Totemic Recall: New ability learned at level 20. Instantly destroys all your totems and refunds 25% of their Mana cost. Blizzard notes a current beta bug where the Mana is not refunded.
- Totemic Projection: New ability learned at level 22. Teleports all your totems to a new location within 30 yards. 1 minute cooldown, costs 25% of base Mana.
- Fire Nova: Fire Nova Totem is gone, replaced by a Fire Nova spell that erupts Fire damage at the location of your current Fire Totem. You can place one Fire Totem and trigger AoE at it repeatedly instead of dropping a new Fire Nova Totem each time.
- Windfury Totem: No longer a weapon enchantment, now a party-wide buff. Shaman with Windfury Weapon on their weapon cannot benefit from it, and a party cannot have it at the same time as Grace of Air or Flametongue Totem.
- Flametongue Totem: Also no longer a weapon enchantment, now a party-wide buff. Shaman with Flametongue Weapon cannot benefit from it, and it cannot be active on a party at the same time as Windfury Totem.
- Tranquil Air Totem: Removed.
This is the change Shaman players will feel within the first five minutes. Three saved totem sets, 5 minute buff totems, a 1 second global cooldown and a way to drag your whole setup 30 yards with the group means far less time spent re-dropping totems and far more time actually playing. Turning Windfury Totem into a buff rather than a weapon enchant also removes the old conflict with Rogue poisons and other weapon enhancements, though Blizzard's exclusivity rules (no Windfury with Grace of Air or Flametongue Totem) mean the Air slot still involves a real choice.
Other baseline abilities
The weapon imbue change was missing Rockbiter Weapon in the original article, which Blizzard corrected alongside the Restoration fix:
We’ve made a couple more edits to the Shaman section as follows:
Under Baseline Abilities we’ve added Rockbiter Weapon to the Weapon Imbues list.
Weapon Imbues: All weapon imbues (Frostbrand Weapon, Flametongue Weapon, Rockbiter Weapon, Windfury Weapon) have their duration increased to 60 minutes from 5 minutes. In addition, they can now be active at the same time as temporary weapon enchantments like Sharpening Stones, Weight Stones, and Wizard Oil.
Under Restoration we’ve noted the removal of Nature’s Guidance.
Removed talents: Nature’s Guidance.
- Weapon Imbues: Frostbrand Weapon, Flametongue Weapon, Rockbiter Weapon and Windfury Weapon now last 60 minutes instead of 5 minutes, and can be active at the same time as temporary weapon enchantments such as Sharpening Stones, Weight Stones and Wizard Oil.
- Lightning Bolt: Ranks 4 and up now have a 2.5 second cast instead of 3 seconds, with the spell power coefficient reduced to match.
- Chain Lightning: All ranks now have a 2 second cast instead of 2.5 seconds, again with the coefficient reduced to match.
Elemental Combat
The Elemental Combat tree is rebuilt around Lava Burst and Lightning Overload, and loses its most famous talent. Blizzard had left the removal out of the original article and added it afterwards:
We’ve updated the section for Elemental Combat for Shaman to account for the missing Elemental Mastery talent removal note. Our apologies for missing that one.
Removed talents: Elemental Mastery. While this talent was a signature mainstay of Elemental Shaman, especially in PvP, it was also a problematic talent that was holding the class back. We could not increase Elemental Shaman damage to appropriate values in PvE and keep this talent. It would have made them much too strong in PvP. The best solution was to remove this talent and give Elemental Shaman new spells and capabilities.
In short, Elemental Mastery made it impossible to raise Elemental damage to where it needed to be in PvE without making the spec far too strong in PvP, so Blizzard removed it and gave Elemental new spells and capabilities instead. PvP Elemental players will mourn the guaranteed-crit burst, but if it was the price of a spec that actually performs in raids, most will take the trade.
- Convection: Now also reduces the Mana cost of Lava Burst.
- Concussion: No longer applies to Frost Shock or Flame Shock.
- Reverberation: Moved from row 3 up to row 2.
- Call of Flame: Now also increases damage done by Flame Shock, Fire Nova and Lava Burst.
- Elemental Devastation: Moved from row 4 up to row 2, mainly to tempt Enhancement Shaman into spending points in Elemental.
- Elemental Focus: Chance to trigger reduced when casting low-rank spells.
- Elemental Alacrity: Formerly Lightning Mastery. Moved from row 6 up to row 3. Now needs only 3 points for maximum rank and reduces the cast time of Lightning Bolt and Chain Lightning by only 0.5 seconds at max rank, but also reduces Lava Burst's cast time. Blizzard explains the old talent was too deep for levelling Shaman and twice as strong as comparable talents for other classes, which caused a spell power scaling problem.
- Improved Fire Nova: Formerly Improved Fire Totems, redesigned. Increases Fire Nova's damage and reduces its cooldown.
- Eye of the Storm: Redesigned. Now grants resistance to spell pushback from damage while casting Lightning Bolt, Chain Lightning and Lava Burst. Previously it only worked after being hit by a critical strike and was really only useful in PvP.
- Call of Thunder: Moved from row 3 down to row 4 and now requires Elemental Alacrity. It is now the 16-point gold medal talent, granting 3% increased critical strike chance to Lightning Bolt and Chain Lightning.
- Elemental Reach: Now also increases the range of Fire Nova and Lava Burst by up to 6 yards and the range of Flame Shock by up to 15 yards.
- Lightning Overload: New row 5 talent. Every Lightning Bolt or Chain Lightning has a chance to instantly cast a second copy at no Mana cost, for half damage and no threat.
- Earthbound: New 21-point gold medal talent. Earthbind Totem instantly immobilizes nearby targets for 5 seconds when cast.
- Elemental Fury: Moved from row 5 down to row 6 and now requires Call of Thunder.
- Lava Burst: New 31-point gold medal talent that grants the Lava Burst spell: a 2.5 second cast that deals Fire damage, increased by 20% if the target has your Flame Shock. 10 second cooldown.
Earthbound is notable because Shaman are, by Blizzard's own description, a class without effective crowd control. A 5 second AoE root on a totem drop is not Polymorph, but it is the closest thing Elemental has had.
Enhancement
Enhancement becomes an Intellect-aware hybrid, with Stormstrike moving up the tree and two new capstone-level tools.
- Earth's Grasp: Moved from Elemental to row 1 of Enhancement.
- Thundering Strikes: Moved from row 2 up to row 1. Now increases the critical strike chance of all spells and attacks, not just weapon attacks.
- Ancestral Knowledge: Now increases Intellect instead of maximum Mana.
- Mental Dexterity: New row 2 talent. Increases your Attack Power by a percentage of your Intellect.
- Improved Ghost Wolf: Improved. Rank 1 makes Ghost Wolf usable indoors and reduces its cast time by 1 second, and Rank 2 makes Ghost Wolf instant.
- Elemental Weapons: Moved from row 5 up to row 3.
- Shamanistic Focus: New 11-point gold medal talent. Reduces the Mana cost of Shocks and Lightning Shield by a large percentage.
- Anticipation: Now grants twice as much Dodge chance.
- Toughness: No longer increases Armor. Now increases Stamina by a percentage.
- Flurry: Now increases attack speed by 5% per point up to 25% (down from 30%). Now requires Mental Dexterity instead of Thundering Strikes.
- Stormstrike: Moved from the 31-point gold medal talent to the 16-point gold medal talent. Cooldown reduced from 20 seconds to 8 seconds. Now increases the damage of your next Lightning Bolt, Chain Lightning or Earth Shock by 20%, instead of boosting the next 2 Nature attacks from any attacker.
- Spirit Weapons: Formerly Parry. This 21-point talent now also reduces threat while you are not using Rockbiter Weapon, and increases threat while you are. Blizzard wants Enhancement to manage threat now that its damage is competitive, while keeping its ability to generate high threat and act as a temporary tank in small groups.
- Mental Quickness: New row 5 talent. Increases your spell damage and healing by a percentage of your Intellect.
- Improved Stormstrike: New row 5 talent that requires Stormstrike. Gives Stormstrike a chance to activate Mana regeneration while casting, and a chance for Stormstrike's cooldown to reset whenever you Dodge or Parry. It lets Enhancement regenerate Mana from Spirit and use Stormstrike more often while tanking.
- Maelstrom Weapon: New row 6 talent. Melee attacks have a chance to stack Maelstrom charges that reduce Lightning Bolt's cast time. With enough ranks and charges, Lightning Bolt becomes instant.
- Rage of the Farseer: New 31-point gold medal talent. A 3 minute cooldown that increases your attack speed by 30% for 25 seconds. Blizzard drew on Heroism and Bloodlust but deliberately made it a personal cooldown rather than a party or raid-wide effect.
Shield Specialization has been removed. Enhancing Totems, Two-Handed Axes and Maces, Weapon Mastery and Improved Weapon Totems are now baseline.
Read together, these talents make Intellect a real stat for Enhancement: Mental Dexterity turns it into Attack Power, Mental Quickness into spell power, and Stormstrike and Maelstrom Weapon both feed into Lightning Bolt. With an 8 second Stormstrike, Enhancement looks less like a Windfury lottery and more like a melee spec that weaves in spells.
Restoration
Restoration gets Riptide and Water Shield, an earlier Mana Tide Totem and several talents placed to help Elemental.
- Totemic Focus: Moved from row 2 up to row 1. Now also discounts Totemic Projection and the totem Call spells.
- Mindfulness: New row 2 talent. Blizzard describes it as allowing Shaman to regenerate Spirit while spellcasting, which reads as Spirit-based Mana regeneration while casting. It is deliberately placed to be within reach of Elemental Shaman.
- Natural Grace: Formerly Healing Grace. Moved from row 3 up to row 2. Now reduces all threat from spells, and was moved earlier to make it accessible to Elemental.
- Tidal Focus: Now also grants increased chance to hit with all spells and attacks.
- Improved Reincarnation: Now also increases maximum health by a percentage.
- Ancestral Healing: Moved down from row 2 to row 3.
- Healing Focus: Now only requires 3 talent points for full effect instead of 5.
- Water Shield: New 11-point gold medal talent that grants a new Shield ability. Only one shield can be active at a time. Its 3 globes grant Mana when an attack hits you or when one of your healing spells critically strikes.
- Tidal Mastery: No longer affects Lightning spells.
- Restorative Totems: Bonus to Healing Stream Totem doubled.
- Mana Tide Totem: Now the 16-point gold medal talent instead of the 31-point one.
- Healing Way: Redesigned. Increases the amount healed by Healing Wave by a percentage.
- Riptide: New 31-point gold medal talent that requires Healing Way. Heals the target instantly and then periodically over 15 seconds, and increases the effectiveness of Chain Heal on targets with your Riptide by 25%. 6 second cooldown.
Nature's Guidance has been removed, per Blizzard's second correction in the thread. Mana Tide dropping to 16 points matters well beyond healers: it is now a realistic pick for hybrid builds, and Blizzard has clearly laid out the top of the Restoration tree (Mindfulness, Natural Grace, Tidal Focus's new hit chance) as a shopping list for Elemental.
Blizzard's closing summary for the class: Shaman are masters of totems who buff, heal and solve problems for any group, and even with the new tools for moving and summoning many totems at once, totem choice and placement remain the skill that sets experienced Shaman apart. They can be melee or spell damage dealers and healers with their chaining spells, are among the sturdiest classes thanks to Mail and a shield, but lack effective crowd control and rely on allies to cover their weaknesses in control and survivability.
