Skyborne get Standard Definition models in early 2027 as Blizzard reworks their HD Druid forms

Blizzard is revising the High Definition Skyborne Druid forms to better match the rest of Azeroth, and confirms Standard Definition Skyborne characters and Druid forms are in development for early 2027.

The Skyborne are getting a Standard Definition look. In a development update published on 7 October, Blizzard confirmed that SD versions of Skyborne player characters, Druid forms included, are in development and due in early 2027. The same post shows the team reworking the existing High Definition Skyborne Druid forms so they sit more comfortably next to the rest of the world's creatures.

Blizzard introduced the update on the forums with a short teaser:

The HD Druid forms are being toned down

Blizzard frames this as part of a broader effort to settle on the right range of fidelity for WoW: Forever, and on what belongs in this version of Azeroth and what does not. Some ideas the team explored during development "didn't quite meet the consistency and cohesion" it is aiming for, and the HD Skyborne Druid forms are the first example it is revisiting.

The changes are specific:

  • Softness has been reduced.
  • Fur textures are more detailed.
  • Color saturation has been adjusted.

The stated reasoning is that the Skyborne come from an exotic environment and their forms should reflect that, but not to the point of clashing with the visual language of other creatures in the world. Anyone who has watched a Skyborne Druid shift into cat form next to a regular Barrens lion will understand the problem. Blizzard does not say when the revised forms will reach the beta or whether they will be in place for launch on 4 November 2026.

Standard Definition Skyborne arrive in early 2027

The bigger news is the SD option. When Blizzard built the SD and HD toggle for player characters, it focused on the races from original World of Warcraft, since that is where players' attachment to the old models runs deepest. That left the High Order Skyborne and Windshaper Skyborne as HD-only, which players pointed out looks jarring next to SD characters in an SD world. Blizzard says plainly that it agrees.

So SD Skyborne player characters, and SD Skyborne Druid forms, are now in development. The timing is "early 2027", with more details promised closer to then. The article includes an early work-in-progress image, but no further specifics on the models, how the toggle will work for Skyborne, or an exact date.

The practical upshot: the SD Skyborne will not be ready for launch day. If you are planning to play Skyborne with every other model set to SD, you will be living with the mismatch for at least the first couple of months. For players who care about a consistent old-school look, this is the fix they asked for, just a little after release. For Skyborne Druids in particular, it means both the reworked HD forms and an eventual SD alternative, which is more choice than most classes get.

The article closes by calling this "just the start" of the team's work on WoW: Forever's look, which suggests the Druid forms will not be the last visuals revisited for consistency.
