Beta fixes roundup: Gnomeregan repaired, missing quest chest items and elevator disconnects addressed

Between October 3 and 6, Blizzard fixed a dialog bug hitting Australian testers, repaired Gnomeregan and ran two beta realm restarts targeting missing quest chest items, transport disconnects and guild errors.

The WoW: Forever beta had a busy few days of repairs. Between 3 and 6 October, Blizzard fixed a dialog bug affecting Australian testers, got Gnomeregan working again and ran two rounds of realm restarts to push out fixes, including one for quest items that were supposed to restock in chests but had simply vanished.

None of these are headline features, but they are exactly the kind of thing that makes or breaks a testing session, so here is what was fixed and when.

The Australian dialog bug

On 3 October, in a thread about a dialog bug hitting Australian testers, Community Manager Kaivax kept it short:

KaivaxCommunity Manager

We’ve fixed the bug that was causing this.

Blizzard did not describe the bug or its cause in the reply, only that it has been dealt with. If you are testing from Australia and still see odd behaviour in dialog, the original thread is the place to say so.

Gnomeregan is back in one piece

A day later, a thread titled "Gnomeregan, Who broke it?!" got the answer everyone already suspected.

KaivaxCommunity Manager

Who broke it? Gnomes, of course.

But earlier this afternoon, we fixed it.

Thanks for your reports!

The post does not say what exactly had gone wrong inside the dungeon, only that it was fixed on the afternoon of 4 October. Blaming the gnomes is, to be fair, historically accurate.

October 5 restart

On 5 October, Blizzard restarted the beta realms at short notice to apply fixes aimed at the stability and quality of the game service. Testers in-game saw countdown messages, and the beta came back a few minutes after going down.

We’re going to do realm restarts in a few minutes, to apply some fixes that should improve the quality of the game service.

Beta testers who are in-game will see server messages counting down to the restart time.

And the Beta will re-open a few minutes after it goes offline.

No specific fixes were listed for this one.

October 6 restart and its fixes

The following day brought a scheduled restart at 3:00 p.m. PDT, announced about 40 minutes ahead, to pick up priority fixes for the beta.

We’re planning to do realm restarts at 3:00 p.m. PDT (about 40 minutes from now), to pick up some priority fixes for the Beta.

One of the fixes is intended to address quests where quest items are intended to be restocked in a chest, but have gone missing.

If you’re in-game in the WoW: Forever Beta, you should see a warning just before the realm goes offline.

Kaivax then added a couple more items going in with the same restart:

A couple more fixes going in with this restart:

  • Fixed a bug that could occasionally disconnect you when riding an elevator or transport.
  • Addressed an error that could occur when joining or leaving a guild.

Taken together, the October 6 restart covered:

  • Missing quest chest items: a fix intended to address quests whose quest items should be restocked in a chest but had gone missing.
  • Elevator and transport disconnects: fixed a bug that could occasionally disconnect players while riding an elevator or transport.
  • Guild errors: addressed an error that could occur when joining or leaving a guild.

The chest fix is the one most levellers will notice. A quest that depends on a looted item from a chest is a dead end if the chest stays empty, and those were exactly the reports that tend to pile up when a beta opens to more players. The transport fix matters too: anyone who has been dropped mid-ride on a lift or boat knows how quickly that turns a short trip into a corpse run. Blizzard described the chest change as "intended to address" the problem, so if you still find an empty chest on a quest, it is worth reporting.
